WHAT ARE MICROPLASTICS?
Microplastics are plastic particles smaller than five millimetres in size. They come from various sources, including the breakdown of larger plastic debris, microbeads in personal care products, and, of most relevance to the fashion industry, synthetic textiles or fibre shedding during washing cycles.
Once in the environment, these plastic particles persist for an extremely long time, causing significant harm to marine ecosystems.
One of the most alarming aspects of microplastics is their potential to progress through the food chain. Once they enter the sea, microplastics attach themselves to plankton and underwater vegetation. After being consumed by fish and other marine life, the microplastics make their way up the food chain before eventually ending up on our dinner plates.
